SALT LAKE CITY—RootsTech, a leading family history and technology conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 2-4, 2012, announced today that fourteen of its popular sessions will be broadcasted live and complimentary over the Internet. Canterbury Cathedral records to go online at findmypast.co.uk

Project announced to increase access to over a million baptism, marriage and burial records dating back to 1538
First time that images of the original parish records from East Kent churches will appear online

Today leading UK family history website findmypast.co.uk has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Canterbury Cathedral Archives to publish online for the very first time historic records from the archive. The first phase of the Canterbury Collection project will see a browsable version of the parish registers of the historic Archdeaconry of Canterbury go online in the coming weeks at findmypast.co.uk.

An estimated 270,000 images containing over a million entries will be published on the website, covering parish churches from a wide expanse of East Kent, including:

the city of Canterbury
the towns of Faversham, Wye and Elham
Thanet
towns along the east Kent coast stretching from Whitstable in the north round to Hythe in the south

The launch has been timed to coincide with the temporary closure of Canterbury Cathedral Archives for refurbishment, so that family historians and local historians can continue to enjoy access to these fascinating records until the Archives reopens in autumn 2012.

From the initial online launch in February, visitors to the findmypast.co.uk website will be able to browse through the scanned pages of the parish records to search for their ancestors. At the same time, findmypast.co.uk will start to transcribe the records, with a view to creating an index and making them fully searchable on the website later this year.

Paul Nixon, Content Licensing Manager for findmypast.co.uk, said: "We're really looking forward to seeing these invaluable records from Canterbury Cathedral Archives go live on findmypast.co.uk, strengthening the site's position as the natural home for UK parish records."

The Canterbury Collection will join an impressive array of UK parish records at findmypast.co.uk, including records from Manchester Archives, Cheshire Archives, Plymouth & West Devon Record Office and Welsh Archives, in addition to over 40 million parish records from family history societies throughout the UK in partnership with the Federation of Family History Societies.

Family History Book Scanning

A new feature of this year’s conference is the addition of a family history book-scanning service. It will provide a free and easy way for attendees to make a digital copy of a printed family history or book of genealogical value (the book must be out of copyright or you must be the copyright holder). Digital copies will be published and searchable freely online at FamilySearch.org. Interested? You can sign up online or just bring a copy of the book to the scanning booth. Either way, you will leave the booth with your original, plus a digital version on a flash drive.

The 1940 U.S. Cenus Community Project

In April, the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be released to the public in the form of an image database from the National Archives. The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project, a national service project started by Archives.com, FamilySearch, and findmypast.com, was created to coordinate efforts to make the images freely searchable by name. SCGS Genealogy Jamboree - Registration is Open!

We are very pleased to announce that registration is open for the 43rd Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, which will be held Thursday through Sunday, June 8 to 10, 2011, at the LA Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, California.

The theme for the 2012 Jamboree is "Lights, Camera, ANCESTORS - Spotlight on Family History."

"Our attendees can expect an outstanding experience in 2012, maybe even better than in the past," promised Jamboree chair Leo Myers. "In addition to our usual sessions on methodology, records and repositories, online databases and software, we have scheduled several sessions that will help you share your family stories. Count on Jamboree to serve up a weekend of classic genealogical methods, search strategies and technology while tossing in the excitement of Hollywood."

Jamboree will feature nearly 60 speakers and over 100 courses over the weekend. Only the most skilled and knowledgeable lecturers are invited to share their expertise and knowledge.

The exhibit hall, home of nearly 70 companies, societies, online data providers, software and technology companies, will be open to the public throughout the weekend.

As is our tradition, we will offer several free sessions during our JamboFREE on Friday morning. "We are committed to making family history affordable. We don't want the economy to to be a roadblock in the search for our roots," Myers explained.

Co-chair Paula Hinkel added, "Interest in family history is growing with every episode of "Who do You Think You Are? on NBC." Jamboree wants to make genealogy accessible to everyone. We help newcomers avoid the mistakes that novice genealogists always make: (1) not keeping track of sources--where the information is found; and (2) waiting too long to talk to elderly family members. We want to help as many people along their journey as we can."

Friday morning JamboFREE offers something for everyone: librarians, genealogical society leaders, beginners who are testing the family history waters, and experienced genealogists.

One of the more popular JamboFREE activities is Kids' Family History Camp, designed for youth ages 8 to 16. Kids' Camp will be held Thursday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. on June 8. Scout leaders are invited to bring their troop members to earn their Genealogy badge.

This year will feature two special pre-event sessions, the Family History Writers Conference, and Tech-Trax, special sessions focused on technology for genealogists. One session will be beginner level ("What is a folder? What happens when I push *THIS* button?") and the other will offer sessions for more computer literate users. Details for these two pre-events will be released soon.

Rounding out the weekend are social activities, including tours, breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, Saturday evening banquet, and the Hollywood Gala on Friday evening.

The Church is in need of large numbers of volunteers to assist with indexing the 1940 U.S. Census, which will be made available online beginnng April 2, 2012. Family history consultants, stake indexing directors, family history center directors, and ward council members should instruct those who are interested in participating to visit familysearch.org/1940census to register.

Book Review of "Waiting in the Wings"

Around Christmas time I won a free copy of Sarah Hinze's new book "Waiting in the Wings - Heaven is Our Real Home." I just finished this wonderfully inspiring book. The stories are so touching. It is a compilation of short stories from many parents-to-be and young children confirming that we did live before this earth life. The book also confirms we have missions and lessons to learn in this earth life and that there is life after death.

To me there were also many genealogy inspired type moments. One of my favorites is on page 87.

Johnny "Tell Me of Grandpa Robert"

I was putting three-year old Johnny to bed when he asked for a bedtime story. For the past few weeks, I had been telling him of the adventures of his great-great-grandfather: a colonizer, a soldier, a community leader. As I started another story, Johnny stopped me and said, "No, tell me of Grandpa Robert." I was surprised. This was my grandpa. I had not told stories of him, and I could not imagine where Johnny had heard his name. He had died before I even married.

"How do you know about Grandpa Robert?" I asked.
"Well, Momma," he said reverently, "he's the one who brought me to earth."

In one sentence three-year-old Johnny teaches of his own existence before birth, of Grandpa Roberts' existence after death, and that we do not come to earth alone.

FamilySearch was extra busy during the holidays. It added 119 million new, free records online (about 64 million indexed names and 55 million browsable images). This latest round of record updates makes 1008 historic record collections online boasting 2.58 billion searchable names and 466 million digital images of historic documents. The numbers are actually very staggering and very exciting for family history enthusiasts! Search the records online now at FamilySearch.org. See the list below for details of the latest additions.

Searchable records on FamilySearch.org are made possible by thousands of volunteers from around the world who transcribe (index) the information from handwritten records to make them easily searchable by computer. 1911 census infirmity column available for the very first time at findmypast.co.uk and 1911census.co.uk

The ‘infirmities’ column is released online for the first time, detailing people’s health conditions
‘Lunatic’ and ‘imbecile’ popularly used, reflecting a different kind of society
Unusual entries: ’old age’, ‘voteless’, ‘bald’ and ‘short of cash’

The final, missing column of data from the 1911 census, which details individuals’ infirmities is today released for the very first time at www.findmypast.co.uk andwww.1911census.co.uk, the family history websites which first launched the 1911 census three years ago in 2009 in association with The National Archives.

The infirmity column details wide-ranging descriptions of peoples’ health conditions as perceived and hand-written by the head of the household on the night of Sunday 2 April 1911. Under data protection regulations, this sensitive information has remained closed until now.

A less ‘politically correct’ society

‘Lunatic’, ‘imbecile’ and ‘feeble-minded’ are some of the most commonly used entries reflecting an era before such terminology was deemed unacceptable. The census in fact prompts the respondent to record if a person is ‘totally deaf’, ‘deaf and dumb’, ‘totally blind’, ‘lunatic’, ‘imbecile’ or ‘feeble-minded.’

However, not all the entries are negative or insensitive. The 1911 records also reflect the humour and curious family dynamics from a century ago - not too dissimilar to what we know now in 2012. One extraordinary record details a Mr John Underwood from Hastings recording his children as ‘quarrelsome’, ‘stubborn’, ‘greedy’, ‘vain’ and ‘noisy’. He even records himself as ‘bad-tempered’ and his wife as suffering from a ‘long tongue’.

Another unusual entry is from Thomas Wallace Young, who was described as being ‘bald and toothless’, helping us picture exactly what he looked like. William Robert Arnold from Yorkshire commented on his financial status in 1911 by recording his infirmity as being ‘short of cash’.

Suffragette labels ‘voteless’ as her infirmity

The cause of the suffragettes is also illustrated within the new records, with some women listing their infirmities as not having the vote or not being enfranchised. For example, four women living in the same household recorded their infirmities as ‘voteless, therefore classed with idiots and children’.

Infirmities? ‘None, thank God’

Some chose to make a note of their good health instead of the health problems the form enquired about, such as ‘well’, ‘healthy’, ‘sane’, ‘alright’ and even ‘perfect’. Evelyn Baker and her family from Leeds were recorded in the census by their father Addiman Parkin Barker as simply being ‘alive’. Seventy-two entries simply say ‘none, thank God’.

Connections between infirmity and profession

A correlation between infirmity and occupation can also be identified in some cases. The biggest source of employment for blind men and women was basket-weaving. Other trades for blind men were musicians or musical instrument makers. Women who were ‘deaf and dumb’ were often employed within the textile or garment trades, or in domestic service, while men were most likely to be labourers.

Debra Chatfield, family historian at findmypast.co.uk, said: “The infirmities column is the last piece of the jigsaw completing the 1911 census. This column alone provides a fascinating insight into life a hundred years ago. It not only reflects health conditions, but also a time before society became aware of political-correctness and certain terminology was deemed acceptable. In the more unusual entries we also get a wonderful sense of post-Edwardian humour, society and family dynamics at this time.

“Researching your family history is a fascinating way to learn about your ancestors. The 1911 census records include detail about occupations, housing arrangements and social status and you are also able to see a copy of the handwritten record itself.”

Audrey Collins, Family History records specialist at The National Archives, said: “The information in the ‘infirmities’ column being released today helps add an extra dimension to the picture of our ancestors’ lives in 1911. We have to remember that the census returns were completed by relatives living in the same house who for the most part had no specialist medical knowledge. Their descriptions provide us with a clue as to how each individual was viewed by other family members, although many would have been reluctant to admit that their relatives suffered from any defect.”

My New Year Goals for 2012

I feel like I made progress this past year on My New Year Goals for 2011. I am looking forward in faith that 2012 has a bright future.

Review of last year's goals

Goal #1: Read my scriptures daily. Feed my body and soul.
Goal #2: Write in my journal regularly if not daily.
Goal #3: Build a Genealogy Inventory Database.
Goal #4: Read good books and write book reviews on them.

Goal 1 & 2 I accomplished! In analyzing why they worked I believe it is because they were the most import goals in my life. I had to feed myself spiritually before I could add other things. Reading my scriptures every day has become a great blessing and habit now in my life.

I found the perfect time for me to read my scriptures and write in my journal. Around 5:00-6:00 pm before the evening activities would begin I would stop what I am doing and read my scriptures. Normally I would also open my journal at the same time and record the days events or my thoughts and impressions. I would leave my journal open in Personal Historian and record in it as the night progressed. Scripture reading and journal writing are habits that are perfectly established in my life now.

Goal 3 & 4 did not go so well and I have spent time considering where I went wrong. One reason could be that I was not clear enough on how I would set aside time and accomplish these things. The other part of me thinks it just wasn't the right season for those items.

I had to find more time in my life to do more things. I have been slowly working all year on training myself to not take such long naps so I could get more done. I was hoping to sleep for shorter periods of time each day. What I found is if I lay down to take a nap I have a hard time waking up. My training wasn't working so great because I physically needed the rest. Then I discovered that I have a problem with gluten and high fructose corn syrup. As I eliminated them out of my diet I found more energy. Well I can't walk a mile, but I can stay up some afternoons and not have to take a nap. I haven't eliminated all naps but having a few days without them each week has been a great blessing. I have some extra time now.

My new goals for the coming year.

Goal #1: Twice a week work on an organizing project.
I found during this past year, as I skipped a nap during a day, that I would find productive things to work on. I have a HUGE To-Do List in many different categories. Most To-Do items will in the long run make me more organized so I choose that favorite word for my Goal. I am going to allow myself the freedom to pick two new things each week to work on. They can be in small little bites or large ones. I am going to have fun deciding what rewarding project will get my attention. Maybe that Genealogy Inventory Database will get done, maybe it won't, but the key is to get activity engaged in something worthwhile.

Goal #2: Read from a good book once a day.
I have a huge reading list. I am just going to find the time to start reading again. Who knows maybe reading will replace the naps. Either way this is something I am going to start working on. I would love to commit to reading an hour each day. I know there are days that reading for a whole hour might be tough and others days I might read for several hours. I think I will feel satisfied if I read at least 5 hours a week.

You may be thinking that my goals don't sound so genealogy-ish but they are. My life evolves around genealogy and those projects and books are jumbled up in the mix.

Now that I feel really comfortable that I have obtainable goals this coming year I can't wait to get started.

Clooz changes ownership

Plymouth, Michigan, 30 December 2011--After 14 years of producing the genealogical utility software *Clooz*, Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, CG, of Ancestor Detective, LLC, has transferred ownership of the software to Joe Bissett of Somerset, Texas. Bissett has plans to re-release *Clooz *at some point in the future, with updates to templates, reports and other customer requests. He is also looking at recent technological Internet options. Kerstens will provide input to the update as needed.

During the transition, the *Clooz *software program will no longer be sold, but the *Clooz 2 Manual * and *Clooz 2 Tutorial* will still be available from the Ancestor Detective Store at http://www.ancestordetective.com/zstore/ for 50 percent off, as long as supplies last, using the coupon code *fe3b0f63dc*. Joe will make an announcement about the software as soon as he has evaluated the impact of various requested updates. As of 1 January 2012, Bissett will provide customer support for *Clooz *users. He can be contacted at jbissett@hot-peppers.com during the transition.

Joe is an accomplished member of the genealogy community who currently administers three different Rootsweb Surname lists: Piggott, Cumminsky, and Kerslake. In 2009 he was the first Bissett male to submit a Y-DNA test to
Family Tree DNA, and now runs the highly successful Bissett DNA project for FTDNA.

Kerstens, the executive director of the Plymouth (Michigan) Historical Museum, remains the managing editor of the *National Genealogical Society Magazine* and a speaker at the upcoming NGS Family History Conference in
Cincinnati, 9-12 May 2012.

Description: Join us for an evening with former Executive Director of the Springfield Museums and author Joseph Carvalho III, as he shares his revised edition ofBlack Families in Hampden County, Massachusetts 1650-1865, recently published by NEHGS. The book presents genealogical, biographical, and historical information about African American individuals and families who lived in the area now known as Hampden County in western Massachusetts. For this event Carvalho will discuss the genesis of the book project and the development of the African American community in western Massachusetts from its earliest colonial origins to the end of the Civil War. The lecture will be followed by a book signing.
