Leading family history website findmypast.com announces the addition of the PERiodical Source Index (PERSI). PERSI is an invaluable genealogical tool enabling users to locate easily key information about people and places.
PERSI, curated by the Allen County Public Library (ACPL) since the 1980s includes over 2.5 million entries from thousands of historical, genealogical and ethnic publications. This fantastic resource will automatically be included in existing findmypast subscriptions, adding value to our service at no extra cost.
This new periodical index on findmypast provides a simple way to access articles, photos, and other material that users might not find using traditional search methods. It is a crucial technical innovation in exploring information, records and transcriptions that aren’t replicated in any other print or online source.
Thanks to findmypast’s partnership with the Federation of Genealogical Societies, users can access original images of articles from PERSI online. Genealogical and historical organizations nationwide are following findmypast’s footsteps, and joining the initiative to digitise their local publications on the PERSI index. Growing momentum on this drive will see more images added over time, so the collection will continue to evolve.
Findmypast’s PERSI launch will include – for the first time in the index’s history - digital images of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 1871-1920. This is another example of the innovative attitude findmypast is applying to genealogical resources.
As PERSI joins findmypast, it includes thousands of new entries, and will continue to grow with quarterly updates, a huge advancement on previous rates of growth.
Most of PERSI’s articles are from periodicals covering the United States and Canada, but the index also includes thousands of genealogy and local history entries (in both English and French) from Britain, Ireland and Australia.
The resources available on PERSI contain over a third of the data available for discovering specific research, building contexts, and providing leads for further investigation, enriching the family history experience with findmypast.
Josh Taylor, Lead Genealogist at findmypast says: “We are delighted to be releasing the new version of PERSI on findmypast. With a new home, a new look, and digital images (for the first time) PERSI will become an even greater resource for family historians.”
