RootsMagic Releases Ancestry Features

I haven't felt like blogging since RootsTech. My mind has been focused on other things. Today the RootsMagic TreeShare & WebHints for Ancestry features were finally released! This has been an amazing ride and totally worth the wait. Tomorrow is always another genealogy day!  And now I have the tools to make it more productive than ever.

Last year, we announced we were working with Ancestry® to integrate Ancestry Hints® and Ancestry’s records and online trees with our software. After months of development and the feedback of thousands of testers, we’re pleased to announce the release of RootsMagic 7.5, a free update to RootsMagic 7 that adds two amazing new features: TreeShare™ for Ancestry and the addition of Ancestry Hints to RootsMagic’s WebHints™ feature.

TreeShare for Ancestry

RootsMagic’s TreeShare for Ancestry will let you move data between your RootsMagic files on your computers and your personal Ancestry online trees. You can transfer people, events, notes, source citations, and even pictures between the two systems.

RootsMagic users also gain the ability to easily share and collaborate with others by giving family members access to their Ancestry online tree. Using the new TreeShare feature, family members can then synchronize the latest changes and additions to both the online tree and their desktop computers.

Ancestry Hints Integration

RootsMagic leverages the Ancestry Hints capability, and as possible matches are found, users may conveniently review them from within the software. RootsMagic then lets you add new information and media from matching records into your file.

RootsMagic and Ancestry: Working Together at Last

Recently, the genealogy world was rocked with the news that Ancestry would be parting with their “Family Tree Maker” (FTM) genealogy software. Thousands of FTM users have since made the switch to RootsMagic. What we didn't anticipate was the announcement by Ancestry that they were going to be discontinuing their Family Tree Maker software.  Between the normal holiday sales and the rush of FTM users we have sold and shipped every last RootsMagic book (and most of the CDs) that we had in stock. When we heard about FTM being discontinued we placed a rush order with our manufacturer for more. But with the manufacturer's holiday hours, we aren't expected to have more books and CD's in stock until early January.

Although our holiday offer has expired, we've decided to extend it (and our FTM upgrade) through January 4, 2016 with a slight modification.

With the delay in being able to ship the book, we will offer the download of the RootsMagic program plus a PDF version of the RootsMagic book for $20.  Don't worry, if you ever lose your registration key, you can always have it re-sent to you and download the software again.

Family Tree Maker® users have a new home at RootsMagic

Family Tree Maker® users have a new home at RootsMagic; Upgrade offer and Free Book and Magic Guides

In a blog posting today, Ancestry.com announced the retirement of its Family Tree Maker® (FTM) genealogy software.

“True to this focus, we’ve taken a hard look at the declining desktop software market and the impact this has on being able to continue to provide product enhancements and support that our users need. With that, we’ve made the decision to stop selling Family Tree Maker as of December 31, 2015.”

Family Tree Maker support and online features will continue through the coming year. During this “sunset period”, many Family Tree Maker users will want to transfer their data into another desktop application that is actively being developed and updated such as RootsMagic.

We understand that change isn’t easy, so we’ve worked hard at putting together some new tools and supports to make the transition to RootsMagic as painless as possible for Family Tree Maker users.

A New Home

Over the past few years, thousands of Family Tree Maker users have made the switch to RootsMagic.  They’ve enjoyed its amazing new features such as color coding, Problem Alerts, Shareable CD’s, running straight off of a flash drive,FamilySearch integration, DataClean, multi-provider WebHints, Mac and Windows versions with a single license, and more!

Clooz News for Roots Magic Users

The following is from Clooz. I haven't tried this yet to see how it works with RootsMagic.

Ancestral Systems Releases Clooz 3.4 We have an exciting new capability to export GEDCOM files to Roots Magic!   We have very exciting news for RootsMagic users! We have implemented a new user interface allowing Clooz users to move data to their RM file after it has been processed in Clooz. This expanded interface is very similar to our highly successful interface with Legacy Family Tree, transferring the details of a Clooz document or census to an external family tree program. Clooz directly reads information from the RootsMagic database (set as Primary on the External File Links list). However, Clooz is not authorized to write directly to the same database. Therefore, a GEDCOM file is produced by Clooz for the user to import into RootsMagic. Image links are also exported. Clooz is able to maintain synchronization of the record identifiers with the RM file. The Clooz data export function allows designation of new family structures of all generations reflected in a census image and properly adds that structure to the existing RM file. This data export interface is a capability that our Roots Magic users have been hoping for since Clooz 3.3 was introduced. Kudos to our software development team. Assuming you take advantage of the automatic updating capabilities in Clooz, you will see a notification of the available update to version 3.4 the next time you start Clooz.  This version includes an updated Help File (identical to the User Guide) to assist our users in learning how to best use this new capability. A very detailed extract of the revised instructions found in the Clooz User Guide can be downloaded at: http://cloozsetups.ancestralsystems.com/exporting34.pdf We strongly suggest that our users download this extract for study and review prior to using the new data interface with your formal RM file. Clooz 3.4 will update your Clooz data file(s) to the new format the first time it is opened. Although we have not had any file upgrade errors during testing, it is always wise to first make a backup copy of your file(s) before opening in Clooz 3.4. Clooz 3.4 is fully compatible with Windows 10. Some other important new features include: 1) Census summaries exported in Individual remarks have been enhanced with additional information from the census, and in early U.S. census years, birth year ranges. 2) Added the Year field for Microform/CD tab on all sources having that tab. 3) Cause of death is now exported in notes/remarks. 4) Lists, such as the Cities List, now show the Personal File # in the usage list for all items (whether document or document detail). 5) Added the option to skip the Log View popup after successful imports/exports. Please remember that in order to receive this new update your license status must be current, having been started or renewed within the last 12 months.
