New AncestryProGen Scholarship Announced

The following is from the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy sponsored by the Utah Genealogical Association.

AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship Program Announced

AncestryProGenealogists has announced that it is accepting applications for a new Scholarship Program, established to "foster and support professional genealogists in their ongoing development efforts."
AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship ProgramFour "aspiring or practicing professional genealogists" will receive a scholarship, to cover tuition, round-trip economy airfare, and hotel expenses to attend one of the four U.S.-based genealogical institutes.  One will be awarded to attend SLIG 2018.  We were contacted early on to determine our interest in this program and are pleased to be included in this amazing opportunity.
Eligible applicants are those who "demonstrate a commitment to genealogy as a profession, a desire for professional development, and the ability to communicate that commitment and desire in writing."
AncestryProGenealogists "has helped people trace their family trees and connect with the past for more than 15 years."  They employ a team of experts with a variety of genealogical specialities.  Their motivation?  "Many of these experts received high-quality training from institutions such as SLIG, IGHR, GRIP and Gen-Fed. We want to provide the same quality professional development to dedicated genealogists to support their next steps in the industry."
Thanks to AncestryProGen!  And we wish each of you luck in the application process!
Unfortunately, due to a lot of complicating factors, applicants won't be aware of the courses to be offered for SLIG 2018 until after they have completed their application.  For that reason, we offer the opportunity to have open dialogue with the director  if you feel it is needed to help you rank SLIG in order of attendance preference on your application.

New From SLIG

SLIG Goes Virtual

We just completed the beta testing for our new Virtual Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum course.  Coordinated by Angela Packer McGhie, CG, and modeled after her Practicum course that runs at SLIG each year, this new virtual course will allow participants to attend and do the research from the comfort of their own home.
Five cases have been selected from those presented in past SLIG Advanced Practicum courses. Students will have a full week to work the research in around their regular schedules.  Registration opens June 25th for SLIG 2016 participants and July 9th to the general public.  Details:  http://ugagenealogy.org/cpage.php?pt=422

Just One Month to SLIG Registration

Learn from the field’s top educators. Obtain in-depth instruction.  Network with respected experts.  Just three of the five top reasons to attend the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, to be held 22-27 January 2017 at the Hilton SLC Center hotel.  Not to mention the fourteen amazing courses from which to choose.
Registration opens July 9th at 9:00 am MDT, and as most of you know, several courses fill quickly.  How quickly?  Let’s just say you definitely want to be logged onto the website and ready to go well in advance. If you haven’t yet renewed your UGA membership, please do so now, so you have the information you need in plenty of time (membership is not required to register; just for the UGA member discount).

Lodging reservations will also be taken directly through UGA/SLIG this year and submitted to the hotel as a group rooming list.  Reservations will open July 9th as well at slig.ugagenealogy.org.
Please take a minute to peruse the courses.  As the month moves forward, full course outlines and additional instructor information will be added to the site.  In the meantime, follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SaltLakeInstituteofGenealogy/)(@SLIGinstitute).  And if you have attended SLIG previously, you can request to join the closed SLIG2017 Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/SLIG2016/).

SLIG Update

The following is from the Utah Genealogical Association (UGA).

What is New at The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG)?

The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) appears to be headed into a record-setting year, with over 330 people registered to date for the 21st annual event.  Participants from 45 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and the Netherlands will converge at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center in 11-15 January 2016.

Built on the strength of the past with an eye to the future, SLIG remains in the forefront of genealogical education offering courses taught by the best instructors the industry has to offer - in fact, the post-nominals behind the names of the course coordinators often take more space to print than the course titles themselves! To listen to them personally, refer to posts on the UGA blog outlining their upcoming speaking engagements.

Earlier this year we celebrated twenty years of offering in-depth genealogical education by introducing a new logo, a new slogan (Elevate Your Genealogical Education), and expanded to thirteen courses. Now, we are pleased to announce a new evening event - SLIG Night at the Family History Library.  Sponsored by The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen), and hosted by the Family History Library (FHL), the event will offer classes, labs, area-specific consultations, and light refreshments on Wednesday, 13 January 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Other events for the 2016 institute include:
  • Rev. Dr. David McDonald, CG, will deliver “Thinking Genealogically,” at the plenary session, Monday 11 January 2016, 7:00 pm. He notes: “A researcher should incorporate evaluative and interpretive skills to be a more effective researcher.  These abilities can become second nature over the course of a genealogical career.”
  • The highly acclaimed, award-winning blogger, The Legal Genealogist, Judy G. Russell, JD, CG, CGL, will deliver the banquet keynote address, Friday 15 January 2016. The title should be announced later this month, but with Judy speaking, who needs to know the title?
And last, but not least on the list of “what’s new”, SLIG will move to new dates beginning in 2017 - still in January, but a little later in the month.  Don’t forget to check out the new dates and available courses on the UGA website.

SLIG News

The following is from the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy.

Lodging Reservations Now Open

Reservations for lodging at the Salt Lake Hilton City Center are now being taken.  If you haven't already booked your lodging for this year's institute, please do so as soon as possible to assure you have a room.

Please note that the reservation process is a bit different from last year.  This link will take you to additional details and the online reservation form.
Changes in the January landscape in SLC
Believe it or not, January is a peak time of the year for some programs, most notably the city-wide Outdoor Retailer convention which draws over 20,000 attendees to view the latest and greatest in outdoor recreational equipment.  This huge program literally fills the city, from hotels to restaurants to a handful of street closures near the Salt Palace Convention Center.  If you have attended before, you have probably noticed them "moving in," as the program has typically been held the week after SLIG.  Recent changes in their schedule may affect those wishing to arrive early for additional research before SLIG.  Read more here.

Course Highlights

Research New York: Resources and Strategies

Karen Mauer Jones, CG, FGBS

Are you stuck in New York? This course will cover New York’s history as it impacts the researcher, and examine in detail the records that have been created and preserved. Broad topics include immigration/migration, laws and the legal system, military records, ethnic groups, vital records, land and property, urban research, turnpikes/canals/railroads, local government/institutional records, probate, newspapers, directories, censuses, and more.

Early U.S. Church Records
Rev. Dr. David McDonald, CG

Genealogists learn that there are more than one set of records, and multiple different approaches, to conduct effective research.
This course, coordinated by Rev. Dr. David McDonald, will examine both theological underpinnings and the records created by churches, ministers, and denominations that can affect and impact on the genealogical work. Denominational “genealogy,” leading lights, naming patterns, cultural and behavioral impacts, in addition to church records as resources will also be considered in this week-long learning experience, along with the utility of records available at the nearby Family History Library.

Read more about this course on the blog and in the course listings.
The following courses have seats available:
  • Course 1: Intermediate US Records and Research

Plenary session:  Whatever our genealogical problem--whatever the brick wall or whatever the identity crisis—the key to solving it lies in three simple words: What’s the Evidence? But, of course, we also have to learn how to answer that question in the most productive ways.  In this year’s keynote address, Elizabeth Shown Mills, CG, CGL, FASG will offer a variety of strategies to guide you through the process of developing your answers, whether you’re working with classic evidence such as land plats or the latest DNA tests.  For three decades as a professional genealogist and historian, Elizabeth Shown Mills has specialized in developing innovative research strategies and principles that have helped genealogy achieve recognition as an academic discipline as well as a professional career and a meaningful hobby.  You may recognize Ms. Mills body of work, which includes the definitive guide to sources and citation, Evidence Explained.  This rare opportunity to hear her speak will be on Monday, January 12th, at 7:00 pm.
